How do you calculate background noise?

Convert each sound level from dB into energy, add the energy values together, and convert the total back to dB using 10 × log10(total energy).

What is a good background noise level?

Under 30 dB is very quiet, 30 to 45 dB is common for many indoor spaces, and levels above 45 to 60 dB may become noticeable or distracting.

Why can’t I just add dB numbers together?

Decibels are logarithmic. Two 40 dB sources do not equal 80 dB; together they equal about 43 dB.

What is signal-to-noise ratio?

Signal-to-noise ratio compares the desired sound level to the background noise level. A higher SNR usually means better clarity.
