Tile Area Calculator

Calculate tile square footage for floors, walls, showers, backsplashes, bathrooms, kitchens, and patios. Estimate tile count, boxes, grout, thinset, waste, trim, and project cost.

Calculate Tile Area

Tile Area = Length × Width. Tiles Needed = Area With Waste ÷ Tile Coverage.
Your result will appear here.

How the tile area calculator works

Single area mode:
The calculator multiplies area length by width and subtracts any excluded area.

Multiple areas mode:
The calculator multiplies one area by the number of same-size areas.

Wall tile mode:
The calculator multiplies wall length by wall height and wall count.

Known area mode:
The calculator starts from your known tile square footage and estimates tile count, boxes, thinset, grout, waste, and cost.

Why use a tile area calculator?

A tile area calculator helps estimate square footage for floor tile, wall tile, bathroom tile, shower tile, kitchen tile, backsplash tile, patio tile, and remodel projects.

It can help calculate net tile area, area with waste, tile count, tile boxes, grout, thinset, trim, labor, and estimated project cost.

What your result means

Your result shows gross tile area, excluded area, net tile area, area with extra waste, tile count, tile boxes, thinset bags, grout bags, trim length, and estimated cost.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate tile square footage?

Multiply the tile area length by the tile area width. For example, a 12 foot by 10 foot floor has 120 square feet of tile area.

How many tiles do I need?

Divide the area with waste by the coverage of one tile. For example, a 12 inch by 12 inch tile covers about 1 square foot before grout spacing.

How much extra tile should I buy?

Many tile projects use 10% extra for simple layouts. Diagonal patterns, herringbone, small rooms, many cuts, and irregular edges may need 15% or more.

Should grout spacing be included in tile estimates?

Grout spacing can slightly increase the coverage footprint of each tile. The calculator includes grout spacing in the tile coverage estimate.

Is this tile calculator exact?

No. It is an estimate. Actual tile needs vary by tile size, grout joint, pattern, cuts, breakage, layout direction, waste, box coverage, and installer method.
