A pace calculator helps estimate hiking time, walking speed, running pace, route distance, and trail ETA. It can be useful for backpacking trips, day hikes, fitness walks, training routes, and outdoor planning.
Actual pace can change based on elevation gain, terrain, weather, altitude, breaks, group size, fitness, and pack weight.
The basic pace, speed, time, and distance formulas are:
Pace = total time ÷ distance
Speed = distance ÷ total time
Time = distance × pace
Distance = total time ÷ pace
Pace is how long it takes to travel one unit of distance, usually shown as minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer.
Pace measures time per distance, such as 20 minutes per mile. Speed measures distance per time, such as 3 miles per hour.
A common hiking pace is about 2 to 3 miles per hour on moderate terrain, but steep climbs, rough trails, heavy packs, and breaks can make it slower.
Use moving time if you want active pace only. Use total elapsed time if you want your real overall trip pace including rest stops, food breaks, photos, and navigation.
