Mulch Calculator

Estimate how much mulch you need for garden beds, flower beds, trees, shrubs, walkways, and landscaping areas. Calculate cubic feet, cubic yards, bag count, bagged mulch cost, bulk mulch cost, and coverage based on area and mulch depth.

Calculate Mulch

Mulch Volume = Area × Depth. Convert mulch depth from inches to feet before calculating volume.
Your result will appear here.

How the mulch calculator works

Rectangular mode:
The calculator multiplies length, width, and mulch depth to estimate volume.

Round mode:
The calculator uses diameter to calculate circular area, then multiplies by mulch depth.

Tree ring mode:
The calculator estimates mulch for a ring by subtracting the inner trunk area from the outer ring area.

Known area mode:
The calculator uses your entered square footage and mulch depth to estimate total mulch needed.

Why use a mulch calculator?

A mulch calculator helps estimate how much bagged or bulk mulch you need before starting a landscaping project.

It can help avoid underbuying, reduce leftover material, compare bagged mulch versus bulk mulch, and estimate project cost for garden beds, flower beds, shrubs, trees, and landscape borders.

What your result means

Your result shows estimated mulch volume in cubic feet and cubic yards, the number of bags needed, estimated bagged mulch cost, estimated bulk mulch cost, project area, mulch depth, extra material allowance, and cost comparison.

Mulch formulas

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much mulch I need?

Multiply the area by the mulch depth in feet. If your depth is in inches, divide it by 12 first. Then convert cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27.

How many cubic feet are in one cubic yard of mulch?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Bulk mulch is usually sold by the cubic yard, while bagged mulch is usually sold by cubic feet.

How deep should mulch be?

A common mulch depth is 2 to 3 inches. A light refresh may only need 1 inch, while heavier weed control may use 3 to 4 inches.

Should I buy bagged mulch or bulk mulch?

Bagged mulch can be convenient for small projects. Bulk mulch is often better for larger areas, especially when several cubic yards are needed.

Is this mulch calculator exact?

No. This is an estimate. Actual mulch needs can vary based on bed shape, slope, uneven ground, compaction, settling, and how thick you spread the mulch.
